By Yvonne Büdenhölzer, Director Theatertreffen
Dear Friends of the Theatertreffen,
This is not how we imagined it! Corona, cancelled, no 2020 Berlin Theatertreffen. No!
Yes! Thomas Oberender and I decided to bring the analogue stage into the virtual sphere.
You will probably be thinking: But that’s no substitute. Yes.
However: We feel that precisely in these times it is more important than ever to strengthen our solidarity with art and culture, to take a stand, to stress how indispensable the theatre and cultural institutions are for society.
Even if the theatre is not considered to be relevant for the system, it surely is relevant for democracy, as a necessary counterbalance in our society!
Thank you! To everyone who made this quick relocation to the internet possible: the Federal Cultural Foundation, 3sat, the Goethe-Institut, nachtkritik.de, the Academy for Theatre and Digitality, the Initiative Digitale Dramaturgie, all colleagues at Berliner Festspiele and to my Theatertreffen-team!
In 2020 we have achieved – just for once – a digital quota of 100 percent.
There is an apt quote in “Chinchilla Arsehole, eyey” by Helgard Haug:
“We have a plan, we made arrangements: They include the possibility that everything might turn out completely different.”
Welcome to the virtual 2020 Theatertreffen!
