40 Years of OEIN (Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos)

In the Musikakademie Rheinsberg, the orchestra, together with the team of the Berlin ensemble PHØNIX16, developed an anniversary concert from the lockdown.

The Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos (OEIN) celebrated its 40th anniversary on 9 May 2020. However, plans for an anniversary concert in La Paz had to be changed, as the 25 musicians of the OEIN have been staying under quarantine at the Music Academy in Rheinsberg, due to the corona-related lockdown for the past two-and-a-half months, and could not return to Bolivia. The orchestra had travelled to Berlin in March to work on the opening concert of MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues 2020 together with the Berlin based solo ensemble PHØNIX16. Thanks to the efforts of the organization team of PHØNIX16, the Goethe-Institut, the Federal Foreign Office and the Bolivian Embassy, the musicians will finally be able to set out on their journey home (more information here).

Composer and conductor Cergio Prudencio founded the first experimental orchestra for traditional Andean instruments in 1980. Affiliated with this were music school programmes for children, teenagers and adults. Carlos Gutiérrez and Tatiana López, who head OEIN today, started out in the ensemble themselves by playing the flute-like instruments Sicu and Zampogna; it was only through this experience that they came into contact with the music of Bolivian indigenous cultures. Since that time, they have taken it upon themselves to cultivate and develop this music, and of the Aymara in particular. In so doing they are successfully advancing Prudencio’s idea of playing contemporary music on indigenous instruments. The fusing of these two musical traditions is an important political statement in a country where indigenous culture has long been suppressed and banned, and Gutiérrez and López still encounter a lot of resistance.

The recordings were made possible by the DAAD Arts & Media support programme with funding from the Federal Foreign Office.
