Stückemarkt at Theatertreffen 2019: Commission of Work awarded to Manuela Infante

Press release from 16 May 2019

Together with the Federal Agency for Civic Education/bpb, the Theatertreffen’s Stückemarkt has awarded this year’s commission of work during a public event at Haus der Berliner Festspiele on Thursday, 16 May 2019. This commission entails the production of a new work at Schauspielhaus Bochum. The winner is Manuela Infante.

An excerpt from the laudatory speech by Vaso Boenisch, chief dramaturg at Schauspielhaus Bochum:

In “Estado Vegetal”, Manuela Infante tells a politically relevant, philosophically inspiring and personally touching story of humankind and nature; no, to be more precise: of humankind as part of nature. Her choice of subject matter is as special in its consistency as is its literary structure. […] It is particularly impressive how Manuela Infante manages to create a drama of such high literary density from this working process, which we would probably call devising a project. This truly shows the literary scope of devised plays! Manuela Infante is an unusually creative, courageous and inspiring representative of author-director-theatre who has something to say.

The new piece will be presented at Schauspielhaus Bochum, whose artistic director is Johan Simons, during the 2020/21 season.

At the conclusion of the Stückemarkt, Schorsch Kamerun, theatre maker and frontman of the band “Die Goldenen Zitronen”, looked back on this year’s Stückemarkt topic “What Happens After the Protest?” in conversation with Thomas Oberender. This was followed by the announcement of the winner by Vasco Boenisch, chief dramaturg of Schauspielhaus Bochum, who represented the theatre.

The awarding of the commission of work was the conclusion of the Stückemarkt, which had conducted its open competition in search of innovative theatre language worldwide for the first time this year.

The Theatertreffen’s Stückemarkt has been promoting contemporary drama in a variety of formats since 1978.
