Taylor Mac: Holiday Sauce... Pandemic! A Virtual Vaudeville on 12 December 2020 via live stream
Berliner FestspielePress release from 27 November 2020
The Berliner Festspiele and other prestigious cultural institutions worldwide will be presenting Taylor Mac’s “Holiday Sauce... Pandemic!,” a live-streamed special event produced by Pomegranate Arts, on 12 December 2020, 20:00 (CET). The program will be followed by an after-show party with Olympia Bukkakis and Cheryl Offoffoff-Broadway. After the live-stream, the show will be available for on-demand online viewing from 13 December 2020 to 2 January 2021.
“Holiday Sauce… Pandemic!“ is a virtual reimagining of Taylor Mac’s acclaimed annual seasonal live show. With collaborators including designer Machine Dazzle music director Matt Ray, Mac blends music, film, burlesque and other artistic elements to celebrate the holidays in all their dysfunction. At the end of a year that has been so challenging for so many, Mac will remind us of the collective power of our chosen families.
“Holiday Sauce” is dedicated to Mother Flawless Sabrina, Taylor Mac’s drag mother, who died in 2017. In tribute to her, each institution presenting “Holiday Sauce... Pandemic!” will honour a local personality who has made a significant contribution to the queer community in that particular city. The Berliner Festspiele has selected Mahide Lein, who, as a queer feminist, has been building bridges between art, culture, social activism and international issues since the 1970s, and from the mid-1990s with her concert and event agency. Tributes will be paid to the winners in the show and presented by Taylor Mac using various media. The 45-minute live stream will be followed by a digital after-show party via Zoom, which is accessible free of charge and is hosted by Olympia Bukkakis and Cheryl Offoffoff-Broadway. Besides Mahide Lein, some of Taylor Mac’s team members will drop by for a drink.
Just before “Holiday Sauce…Pandemic!” begins, Mac will receive the International Ibsen Award 2020 in a digital ceremony at 19:00 (CET). The International Ibsen Award is conferred every two years to a person or ensemble that showcases new artistic perspectives in the field of theatre. Mac is the first artist from the United States to receive this prize. The award ceremony can be followed in a free live stream on the website of the Nationaltheatret Oslo.
The “Holiday Sauce…Pandemic!” event follows the release of Taylor Mac’s “Holiday Sauce” album on 13 November. The recording celebrates this special time of the year with unique interpretations of well-known holiday classics including “Little Drummer Boy” and “Silent Night”; Mac’s original song “Christmas with Grandma”; and cover versions of “All Tomorrow’s Parties” by the Velvet Underground and “Super Rich Kids” by Frank Ocean, among others. More information about the album can be found at TaylorMacHolidaySauce.com.
In October 2019, Taylor Mac was a guest at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele as part of the Immersion programme series with his show “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music” in which Mac told an alternative history of the USA in 246 songs on four evenings. “Holiday Sauce... Pandemic!” is the continuation of the collaboration with Taylor Mac.
