Kunst und Migration seit 1960

Nowhere were the social and cultural changes in West Germany more powerfully manifested than in Berlin’s Kreuzberg neighbourhood. Here, the transformations reshaping life in the Federal Republic through labour recruitment agreements with countries such as Italy, Greece and Turkey played out on a local scale. The group exhibition Kreuzberg: Kunst und Migration seit 1960 (Art and Migration since 1960) presents artistic perspectives on migration, work and life in the district that is also home to Gropius Bau.

Dabei sein und nicht schweigen

For more than five decades, Gabriele St&ouml;tzer has been grappling with questions of justice, gender and self-determination. Her own body often plays a central role in her work – not as an object, but as a site of resistance and feminist self-assertion. Opened at Gropius Bau in June 2026, Dabei sein und nicht schweigen (Showing up and Not Remaining Silent) is the artist’s largest institutional solo exhibition to date.&nbsp;

A&nbsp;Play Space for Kids

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities. They set the tone and decide what happens in this place.

A Short History from 1900 to the Present

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s Playing in the City presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

The Practice – What Moves Artists&nbsp;is a book series by Gropius Bau that invites artists to showcase a practice that they pursue, that has influenced them or that has been with them for a long time. In the fourth volume of the series On Fleeing into the Public, new drawings are superimposed over the artist Gabriele St&ouml;tzer’s photographic archive and traverse a conversation that revolves around the relationship between the underground and the public, her beginnings as an artist and the continuation of her work.

The group exhibition focuses on the diverse and largely overlooked cultural production on the topic of labour migration and on how artists in the neighbourhood have responded to the tensions and issues of their time.

Over the course of his artistic career, Christoph Schlingensief (1960–2010) relentlessly confronted the absurdities of the present. The exhibition Es ist nicht mehr mein Problem, macht eure Scheiße alleine (It’s not my problem anymore, deal with your own shit) at Gropius Bau sheds light on his visionary, genre-defying body of work, ranging from striking political actions to projects spanning theatre, opera, film and the visual arts.

In the Gropius Bau’s atrium, the exhibition opens with the large-scale installation Kaprow City, a work closely associated with Schlingensief’s time in Berlin. From there, it unfolds across eight rooms, bringing together installations and video works contextualised by documentary film and archival material.The exhibition is not a retrospective in the classic sense of the word; instead, it brings Schlingensief’s central bodies of work into conversation, highlighting the ways in which his artistic strategies permeate one another and constantly challenge audiences to take an active stance. In the most comprehensive presentation of his work in Germany in over a decade, the focus is therefore not on the completed work, but on the processes of questioning, doubting and failing that characterises his practice.

Outstanding international that liberal societies and their cultural institutions face in a new, multipolar world order. artists such as Marina Abramović, Gabriele St&ouml;tzer and Akira Takayama will set the agenda both thematically and aesthetically. Entitled “Die gro&szlig;e Unordnung” (The Great Disorder), the four-day focus Reflexes &amp; Reflections will also enquire about the challenges.

In 2026, the line-up welcomes audiences to make new discoveries and features outstanding representatives from a variety of scenes, spanning a highly diverse cultural and musical landscape. At the same time, it celebrates two pioneering voices – Anthony Braxton and Alexander von Schlippenbach – who have shaped the global scene for decades. The programme has been published, advance ticket sales are open.
