As part of Sp&auml;tschicht x AL.Berlin, RAWY Films presents a curated short film programme on the lower ground floor of Gropius Bau. The selection brings independent SWANA films (Southwest Asia and North Africa) to the screen, creating space for different perspectives, stories and cinematic expressions.&nbsp;

Under the title Notes on Staying, RAWY Films presents three short films and two music videos from Palestine, Lebanon, Cyprus and Iran. Together, these works explore themes of memory, resistance, identity and belonging, offering personal and political perspectives from across the SWANA region. &nbsp;RAWY Films is a Berlin-based collective of passionate filmmakers and cinephiles on a mission to cultivate a community around independent films from Southwest Asia and North Africa. RAWY showcases new talent and untold stories, presenting them through curated pop-up cinema events in international and local arthouse cinemas. In doing so, RAWY creates spaces for cultural exchange, community and artistic expression.

Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition

Marina Abramović, one of the most influential contemporary artists, presents Balkan Erotic Epic. The Exhibition at Gropius Bau, marking her first major solo show in Berlin since the 1990s. The exhibition brings together historical and new works by the performance artist, tracing her ongoing engagement with ritual, eroticism, death and the body as a site of political resistance.

What has been the role of play in public space, both historically and in the present? Complementing BAUBAU, our free play space for kids, Gabriela Burkhalter’s Playing in the City presentation traces the history of playgrounds since their emergence in 1900 to today. The free presentation is open to all and can be seen in two rooms next to the play space’s entrance.

Playing, laughing, making noise, letting off steam, doing nothing – all in an exhibition venue! With BAUBAU, the artist Kerstin Br&auml;tsch designed an&nbsp;admission-free play space for kids, where more is allowed than forbidden. On Gropius Bau’s ground floor, colourful wallpapers, structures, objects and open-ended material called “loose parts” configure flexible spaces that are shaped by children’s activities. They set the tone and decide what happens in this place.

The Practice – What Moves Artists&nbsp;is a book series by Gropius Bau that invites artists to showcase a practice that they pursue, that has influenced them or that has been with them for a long time. In the fourth volume of the series On Fleeing into the Public, new drawings are superimposed over the artist Gabriele St&ouml;tzer’s photographic archive and traverse a conversation that revolves around the relationship between the underground and the public, her beginnings as an artist and the continuation of her work.

With Diane Arbus: Konstellationen, Gropius Bau presents the most comprehensive exhibition of her work to date. Featuring 454 prints, many of them shown here for the first time, Konstellationen offers new perspectives on Arbus’ iconic images and the wide range of her portraiture.

Persistence of Vision

Working in New York City between the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the onset of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, Peter Hujar captured a pivotal cultural moment in piercing black-and-white photographs. In the exhibition Persistence of Vision, Hujar’s photographs are interspersed with contemporary works by New York City-based artist Liz Deschenes, opening up an intergenerational dialogue on photography.&nbsp;

For the tenth edition of Spätschicht, we warmly invite you to join us once again for a summer evening at Gropius Bau. Curated together with AL.Berlin, our free live programme unfolds both inside the building and out on the south terrace, featuring concerts, DJ sets and screenings.

AL.Berlin is a cultural collective and platform based in Berlin, dedicated to creating spaces of encounter through music, art and critical exchange. Rooted in the contemporary cultures of South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) and its many diasporas, AL.Berlin’s work focuses especially on live music as a powerful, sensory, and communal experience, one that connects people, creates shared memories and builds lasting networks. Since 2019, the collective organises AL.Festival Berlin’s leading festival for SWANA music, taking place at changing locations across the city.Spätschicht x AL.Berlin is curated by the AL.Berlin team, including Ziad Fayed, Eyal Vexler, Vivien Dawit, Krishan Rajapakshe, Hannah Fisher, Antonia Eckardt and Ramez Melhem, in collaboration with Nora-Swantje Almes, Alexandra Philippovskaya, Aylin Himmetoglu and Edessa Malke from the curatorial team of Gropius Bau.
