Letter to Oneself (2020)
Rituals for active contemplation reoccur throughout Lee Mingwei’s work. Taking The Letter Writing Project as a point of departure, the newly developed work Letter to Oneself reacted to the global COVID-19 pandemic and invited the public to write letters to themselves, dealing with the following questions: What is the current situation like for you? What worries you the most? What gives you hope? These letters could be sent to the Gropius Bau until 22 May 2020.
The letters that arrived are presented here digitally. The originals have entered the artist’s archive. In the video the artist Lee Mingwei and the actors Sithembile Menck and Marie Schuppan read a selection of these letters.
Sithembile Menck studied acting at the ZHdK in Zurich. Since 2010 she has performed at theatres including Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Schauspiel Hannover and Schauspiel Köln and has been part of various TV productions such as Tatort. Furthermore, she works as an audio book narrator. From late 2020, she will be starring in the feature film 5 Seasons by Katja Sallay.
