Forms of Insistence, Tenderness and Refuge
Programme accompanying the exhibition “Zanele Muholi”
The public programme Forms of Insistence, Tenderness and Refuge accompanies the survey exhibition of Zanele Muholi at the Gropius Bau. It includes conversations, movie screenings, special tours and a poetry convening held from November 2021 until March 2022.
The public programme draws from Audre Lorde’s seminal text Uses of the Erotic: The Erotic as Power first published in 1978. Self-described “black, mother, warrior, poet” Lorde’s writing has influenced generations of LGBTQIA+ communities in Germany and been seminal to the formation of ADEFRA. lnviting poets, musicians, activists, and artists, the programme will celebrate forms of refuge, intimacy and “the queer self” through dedicated discourse around gender justice, Black poetics and image building from within conditions of precarity. Expanding from Muholi’s oeuvre and methodologies as a visual activist, the programme will include conversations, poetry gatherings and special tours led by African, Afro-German and diasporic creative practitioners in the city.
