What is masculinity for you?

Instagram: Call for entries

In late January, JuGroBa (the Young Gropius Bau), issued a call to all young people aged 15 to 20: “Show us your notion of masculinity in the form of a text, video, photograph, illustration, painting – or whatever else you can think of. Also briefly explain what masculinity means to you today and how you represent it in your contribution.” Each participant received a poster for the photography exhibition, Masculinities: Liberation through Photography, in the Gropius Bau. The best entries were posted on JuGroBa’s Instagram channel and the “likes” were counted. The Berlin youth theatre group, Die Debütanten (The Debutants) won – with the most likes for the video trailer for their production of Penthesilea.

Penthesilea: An Experiment

A “Die Debütanten” theatrical production directed by Annika Gebhard

“It is I, young god of war, to whom you now belong!” Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, tells Greek hero Achilles. Men and women – a never-ending story of love, hate and above all, incompatibility. What both Kleist in his early 19th-century tragedy and present-day “enemies of emancipation” discover: Women will probably never be able to really conquer men. But what if men want them to? In recent decades, the concept of femininity has been fundamentally reformed. Yet there is no modern notion of masculinity. What do today’s young men want to be tomorrow – Greek heroes, Peter Pans, fitness junkies or just people?

“Die Debütanten” are a young theatre collective from Berlin. Since their founding in 2018, they have mounted three projects, one of which received the Dieter Baacke Prize in 2020. All three plays deal with emancipation and gender equality. Penthesilea: An Experiment, which premiered in early 2020, is concerned with modern masculinity. The collective is eagerly waiting for the pandemic to end to finally be able to perform live again.
