Talk with the audience 21 November, after the performance

A highly stylized “soldiers’ opera” that evokes the atmosphere of a pre-war black-and-white film (the title is “Scratched Celluloid”) and which uses several individual fates and their personal tragedies to examine a dark chapter in Hungary’s history: its pact with Nazi Germany against a backdrop of home-grown nationalism and anti-Semitism, and its part in the Russian campaign of 1942 that ended with the death of hundreds of thousands of Hungarian soldiers in the Russian winter.
