Tanztreffen der Jugend

Founded in 2014, the national contest looks for pieces by young dance ensembles in schools, from structures or groups linked to the indie or professional (dance) theatre scene, who alone or under professional guidance find their own themes and express them in an artistic form using contemporary choreographies. There are no temporal, thematic or formal guidelines. A complete (rehearsal) run of the production must be submitted with the application form. The competition is announced every year in October. The closing date is the end of March.

The Selection

A jury will choose the award-winners. Initially, they make a pre-selection on the strength of the application material and, after interviews and discussions with these ensembles, the final award-winners will be chosen. The prize is an invitation to the Tanztreffen der Jugend in Berlin. Alongside artistic and formal criteria, a decisive factor in the selection procedure is that the productions are created and developed in close dialogue with the choreographers / art education teachers and the youths involved; the content should be have a clear relevance for young adults, and the attitude and perspective of young people should be strong. The productions should be an example of works by and with youths.

The Performances

On every day of the festival, one of the selected productions will perform in front of an audience at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. Every ensemble will be allocated one day to set up and rehearse, and the entire technical support of the Berliner Festspiele. All performances will be recorded.

The Treffen

Aside from the public performances, the interaction of groups is equally, if not more, important. The Campus, which is especially conceived for this purpose, offers many opportunities for this in various workshops, performance talks and discussions. In addition, a blog will be set up to comment on the festival goings-on. Other national contests at the Berliner Festspiele will complement the programme with texts and music.

The Forum

The Forum of Tanztreffen der Jugend has an exchange programme aimed at dance teachers. It consists of impulse and intensive workshops as well as discursive formats for performance talks and/or thematic focal points. The main aim of the Forum is to provide opportunities for collegial exchange.
