The 10 Selected Productions
Each year, ten remarkable productions are selected by an independent jury of critics from among around 400 shows within the German-language region and the viewing period.
Each May, they are presented at Haus der Berliner Festspiele and other venues throughout the city, depending on the individual productions’ staging requirements. Ever since the Theatertreffen’s foundation – when it was still known as “Berliner Theaterwettbewerb (Berlin Theatre Competition)” – this selection of 10 productions has been the festival’s core. An invitation to the Theatertreffen brings national recognition to the respective production teams – and often a boost to their careers. With its 2020 festival edition, the Theatertreffen introduced a female quota of at least 50 percent in the position of directors for the selection of 10 productions. This rule will be observed up to and including the year 2023.
The 10 Selected Productions 2021
On 9 February 2021, the jury for the 58th Theatertreffen announced its selection.
285 productions in 60 cities were viewed either in person or online. 531 votes were given and 26 productions were suggested and discussed.
The selection period for the festival edition 2021 considered productions that had their premiere between 27 January 2020 and 5 February 2021.
The Theatertreffen-jury consists of seven theatre critics and selects the ten productions to be invited. These jurors are usually serving three years in succession. The jury is appointed by the head of the Theatertreffen, the director of the Berliner Festspiele and the German Cultural Foundation.
