Concert
feat. Keiji Haino, Peter Evans, Mars Williams
The compositions of Michael Wertmüller – as diverse as they may be – can all be seen as contributing to solving the problem, how does density originate? Density – mediated as energy, brute forte, loudness, tempo, etc. – results here from extremely gracefully built structures that are folded into each other, linked, and associated such that they result in a great whole. But the graceful build is not exhausted in the compositions but only elevated. It is audible all along as a trace, as a necessity (as reason, cause). Wertmüller plays out this dialectic of fragility in these compositions to its completion. This is meant literally: his music is derived from a sheer inexhaustible richness but despite all its aggression, it also has an audibly luxurious character.

Since more than a decade Swiss born Berlin based Michael Wertmüller ranks among Europe’s most versatile drummers, covering a stylistic range from noise, to free jazz, to contemporary music. He first gained wider recognition with the Swiss free core/12-tone death metal outfit Alboth! which is often compared to John Zorn’s Naked City. In the trio Full Blast he can be heard as an improvising musician alongside Peter Brötzmann and Marino Pliakas of Steamboat Switzerland fame. For this edition of the Berlin Jazz Festival, he reinforces the trio by ex-NRG-saxophonist Mars Williams, Japanese noise guitarist Keiji Haino and New York’s enfant terrible of the jazz trumpet, Peter Evans.
