Pianist Jutta Hipp (1925-2003) played an extraordinary part in the German-American music history. As a visual arts student during the Third Reich she was living in Leipzig where she joined secret jam sessions with like-minded musicians. After the war she relocated to Munich and Frankfurt. In the early fifties she advanced to be Germany’s most important artist on the jazz piano. After moving to New York in 1955 she worked with big names like Charles Mingus and Zoot Sims and was the first European to record for Blue Note. But Hipp was unable to make a living as a musician and could never really overcome her severe stage fright. Finally she decided to put an end to her musical career. After 1958 she sunk into oblivion, making a living as a factory worker, and returning to her first love: painting.

Julia Hülsmann and Rolf Kühn –who was a personal friend of Jutta Hipp– are the creative minds behind this homage to Jutta Hipp. These exquisite exponents of two different eras of German jazz team up with New York based sax-heavyweight Joe Lovano who adds the American perspective.

__________

For many decades, jazz drumming and tap dance have shared a highly inspiring rhythmic liaison. US-American pianist Geri Allen takes up this tradition with her quartet Timeline.
Originating from the M-Base movement, a collective around Steve Coleman, she has since come a long way and is rated one of the most versatile musicians of today.

Geri Allen will be performing another concert with her Trio on Saturday Nov 4, 3:00 pm at the Akademie der Künste.
