Johanna Borchert

Pianist and singer Johanna Borchert has long since established herself as a major fixture both inside and outside the Berlin jazz scene. She works tenaciously at making permeable the divisions between jazz, pop and avant-garde. With formations such as Schneeweiss & Rosenrot or Little Red Suitcase, she contrasts fragile emotionality with formal strictness. Some of her pieces are acoustically intimate, others are electronically reserved, and often, these levels pervade each other. With her latest project, Johanna Borchert consciously shifts her vocal skills to the fore. And she knows how to lend a nonchalant, melancholic expression to these very personal songs that often arose out of intensely intimate moments.
