Trio Feral © Jenn Gavito
Even in New York, Trio Feral are still regarded as an inside tip. Their soundscapes, infused by impulsive beats, are wayward, scandalous, ingenuous and insolent. The Melbourne-born Barney McAll who now resides in the Big Apple has teamed up in Brooklyn with Jonathan Maron and Bill Campbell to reinvent music in a playful way. The piano trio principle – a formation that one would think is truly exhausted by now – is turned upside down. Yet to try and nail their music to one single genre is almost impossible. What the trio have in their portfolio – a combination of sub dub, techno, noise, power space-rock and free jazz – is free music in the original sense of the word.
