The first of three nights showcasing the music of young piano trios at A-Trane begins with an all-German group led by a pianist born in Berlin-Kreuzberg in 1986. Julia Kadel studied psychology at Humboldt University and jazz piano at the Carl Maria von Weber College of Music in Dresden, where she met her partners in the trio: the bassist Karl-Erik Enkelmann and the drummer Steffen Roth. Their first album, “Im Vertrauen” (On Trust), was released last year on the historic Blue Note label, a remarkable accolade for a young European group. “Jazzthing’s” reviewer accurately detected the presence of “poetry and austerity, shape and freedom” in the group’s music, which represents a thoughtful extension of the piano-trio tradition.
