Each year, a group of British politicians break off from their duties in the Houses of Parliament to give prizes to deserving jazz musicians. For 2015 their award for the outstanding instrumentalist went to the 24-year-old trumpeter, composer and bandleader Laura Jurd, who has made a big impression on the British scene since emerging from her studies at the Trinity Laban conservatory in London. She has appeared with a variety of bands, including a septet called Human Spirit, and is a founder of Chaos Collective. This year she is concentrating on her recently renamed quartet, completed by three gifted members of the younger generation. In the “Guardian”, the critic John Fordham described a performance at which she “stretched critics’ and musicians’ repertoire of superlatives”, and her early ventures outside Britain have received an enthusiastic response from audiences in Münster, Dublin, Warsaw and elsewhere.
