Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit © Kim Hiorthø
With the Large Unit, the Norwegian drummer and bandleader Paal Nilsson-Love finds a fresh answer to one of the oldest questions in jazz: how can composed music and improvisation be made to work together to their mutual benefit? Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus and Gil Evans were among those who found ways of ensuring that written notes encouraged rather than restricted the spontaneity of the improviser. Nilsson-Love, born in Molde in 1974, studied at the Trondheim Conservatory. He appeared in Berlin in 2014 as a member of The Thing and now he returns with his own 11-piece band, devoted to compositions that exploit all the resources available to the modern composer while making the best use of the individual characters of his musicians and of their collective energy and flexibility.
