Lucia Cadotsch Speak Low © Michael Jungblut
Many singers deliver standards songs as they are conventionally sung. A few, such the late Betty Carter or Cecile McLorin Salvant (who made such a striking appearance at the 2015 Jazzfest Berlin), take risks and reap a greater reward. Lucia Cadotsch is one of those, but it is impossible to imagine her interpretations of “Speak Low”. “Don’t Explain” or “Moon River” without the contributions of her two Swedish collaborators, the saxophonist Otis Sandsjö and the bassist Petter Eldh. Born in Zurich in 1984, Cadotsch studied jazz singing in Berlin and Copenhagen. She is known for her long-standing collaboration with pianist and singer Johanna Borchert. She and her two partners create a distinctive format for each individual song, reviving familiar material through the application of extended instrumental vocabularies. Nothing less than a new approach to the torch song, the result is coolly spectacular.
