Since graduating in 2002 and making her base in Brooklyn, the guitarist Mary Halvorson has become almost a ubiquitous presence on the improvising scene, appearing in her own trio, quintet and septet and in collaborations with Michael Formanek, Taylor Ho Bynum, Marc Ribot, Chris Speed and many more. Her solo album, “Meltframe”, which featured her startling variations on themes by Duke Ellington, Ornette Coleman, Carla Bley and others, was warmly received last year.
German-born saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock spent the time from 1989-2008 in London, where she was a member of F-IRE Collective, before moving to Brooklyn, where she now lives. In the 2015 “Down Beat” poll she was named No 1 rising star on soprano saxophone. She and Mary Halvorson have appeared together in various bands, including Laubrock’s Anti-House, Halvorson’s septet and the drummer Tom Rainey’s trio.
