The vibraphonist Orphy Robinson and the pianist Pat Thomas, both born in 1960 and based in the UK, perform together as Black Top, often adding guests (from the free-improvising saxophonist Evan Parker to the Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore) for their live and recorded performances. Tonight they invite two Berlin-based musicians to take part in their world of collective creation. The saxophonist Frank Gratkowski, born in 1963, studied with Charlie Mariano, Sal Nistico and Steve Lacy before performing with countless ensembles around the world. The guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly was born in 1960 to Haitian parents on Chicago’s South Side; he has lived in Europe since the 1990s. He was a member of the Black Rock Coalition and has recorded with Muhal Richard Abrams, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Cassandra Wilson and Miles Davis.
