The brilliant new trio of Turkish vocalist Cansu Tanrıkulu, who has drawn quite some attention in Berlin during the past years, will celebrate their world premiere with a “Suite” at Jazzfest Berlin.
World premiere
In recent years, the Turkish vocalist Cansu Tanrıkulu has made a huge splash on the Berlin scene, working in a slew of disparate projects where her arresting style has masterfully translated numerous contexts, whether bringing song-like clarity to Max Andrzejewski’s Hütte or in more abstract contexts where she manipulates lines and splotches with the splendour and imagination of a painter. She’s achieved a new apotheosis with Melez, a dazzling new trio with drummer Jim Black (Human Feel, AlasNoAxis) and keyboardist Elias Stemeseder. The group will give the world premiere of a shape-shifting new “Suite” that glides and charges fluidly through frequently changing moods, attacks, and techniques, all cogently united by the singer’s astonishing range and charismatic presence. Passages of serene melancholy expressed in purely acoustic terms smack into moments of gut-punching heft, with Stemeseder deploying an arsenal of synthesizers and sound processors, and Black unleashing some of his most sublimely off-kilter grooves. Listeners will experience a true sonic journey that melds the poetic with the concrete, the euphoric with the terrifying, the real with the fantastical.
