Chilean tenor saxophonist Melissa Aldana draws inspiration from Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, while also developing a musical language of her own.

Over the last decade, Chilean native Melissa Aldana has established herself as a poignant voice on the tenor saxophone, drawing upon the legacies of greats like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson while forging her own sleek, slashing sound. Following two impressive trio recordings, she recently embarked on her first thematic suite with “Visions”, using the aesthetic of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and leading a quintet with piano and vibraphone that better allows her harmonic ideas to flower. The music swivels and grooves with refined elegance, working deeply with post-bop tradition while engaging in sublime group interplay. For her Jazzfest Berlin debut, she performs with her long-time bassist Pablo Menares, along with drummer Kush Abadey, and the celebrated Norwegian guitarist Lage Lund.
