With The Young Mothers, the Norwegian bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten shares the polyglot conception he has been honing for years as a member of bands like The Thing and Atomic, forging a gritty, hard-hitting sound that’s congealed with players from his adopted home in Austin, Texas. The leader carves out flinty, hard-hitting grooves along with drummer Frank Rosaly, shaping music that organically toggles between funk, hip-hop, punk rock, and free jazz. Jawwaad Taylor is equally nimble at dropping rhymes as he his blowing scythe-like lines on trumpet, while Ayler-esque saxophonist Jason Jackson, vibist Stefan González, and electric guitarist Jonathan F. Horne alternate between soulful vamps, searing solos, and chattery interplay, but it all adds up to something more than a laundry list of ideas. There is a wild passion to the playing and the intuitive writing allows the group to hurtle from collected contemplation to furious expression without a hiccup. The players have a deep fluency in every disparate style they tackle, so even the most whiplash-inducing shifts feel necessary.
