Artistic Leadership - Seminar

What can young musicians learn from encounters with different generations in order to reflect on and develop their own artistic practice and musical voice?

Artistic Leadership – a seminar by the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin in collaboration with Jazzfest Berlin 2023

GENERATIONS _ Artistic Practice

Convenor: Prof. Kristín Guttenberg

This year the Hanns Eisler School of Music’s seminar in Artistic Leadership will co-operate with Jazzfest Berlin in an endeavour to generate a stimulating exchange between artists from the most divergent generations and contexts. It will focus on individual and collective working practices in artistic processes and projects, with particular interest being paid to the multiplicity of methods and approaches and also experience in team and project work. Through concert visits, workshops and discussions, the participating students will enter a direct exchange and scrutiny both of their own methods and of the at times very different working practices of the artists and ensembles in this year’s festival. A selection of concert visits and artists’ talks will be chosen within the festival and beyond based on the interests and questions put forward by participants in the seminar.

The seminar programme will be finalised in two kick-off and preparatory meetings with the participating students. It will start with events and concerts during the festival from 2 to 5 November and a workshop with Fred Frith on 4 November.

Bringing newcomers and young musicians together with established jazz greats has been a key component of Jazzfest Berlin for many years and aligns with one of the most important elements of the music school’s programme of study. In addition to the Jazzfest ImproCamp for children, Jazzfest Berlin is also working together with the Hanns Eisler School of Music in order to offer students additional insights into and contacts within the international scene. As one of Berlin’s distinguished cultural institutions, the School of Music collaborates closely with a variety of organisations of all sizes and disciplines – a process that will be continued successfully in this year’s collaboration with Jazzfest Berlin.

Further information and dates for the seminar programme will follow in the coming weeks.

Registration is open to students of the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin / Jazz Institute Berlin / Klangzeitort Institute for New Music Berlin as well as other intersted students of the Academy of Music and the University of the Arts Berlin. Guest attendees are welcome if places are available.
