Pictures of an Exhibition / Pictures of Pictures from Pictures of Pictures

KP Brehmer / Philip Corner

Tue to Fri Fr 13:00 – 18:00
Sat 11:00 – 14:00

In 1975, KP Brehmer created a cycle of ten etchings in which he retranslated the main motifs of Modest Mussorgsky's “Pictures at an Exhibition” (1874) as sonagrams into the visual. In the years 1975-79, Philip Corner used these as a template for a new transformation, this time into the acoustic. His ten piano pieces, each lasting five minutes, follow the graphic progression of Brehmer's sheets, whereby the sound design and key sometimes refer to Mussorgsky's original. Corner's scores consist of musical notations, written playing instructions and graphic sketches.

Opening: Tue 18 March, 17:00

The exhibition presents the project with ten etchings by KP Brehmer and eleven score pages (hand-colored photocopies) by Philip Corner.

“The pages for each movement are working notes from which I actually played, and which are intended as practical scores usable by other pianists. [...] I trust that anyone who might wish to perform it will be able to resolve the unresolved area between notated score and finished sound. ” (Philip Corner)

Works by Philip Corner will be performed on 19.3. by the Ensemble Apartment House.
