Concert | Cikada & Elision
Brisbane is located in the southern hemisphere at 153° longitude. Oslo is almost exactly on the opposite side of the globe at 11° in the northern hemisphere. Two geographically distant, first-class ensembles of contemporary music could hardly have come together to undertake joint projects. The collaboration, which culminates in Richard Barrett's performance installation ‘Dark Matter’ and is also expressed in the two concert halves of the Cikada and Elision Ensembles, is a thoroughly symbolic gesture, offering auditory glimpses into the musical languages of Norwegian and Australian composers.
The Norwegian section focuses on individuality and time. Jon Øyvind Ness stands for subjective relativism, while Lars Petter Hagen problematises the relationship between the collective and the individual. Cecilie Ore is concerned with the energetic present, while Bent Sørensen brings the mythical past into the present. In Iannis Xenakis' piece, it is the mathematical transformation of space and time.
Australia's proximity to the Asian continent and the musical traditions native to that region has led the Elision Ensemble to focus on intercultural musical influences. Composer Liza Lim draws on Islamic literature. Michael Finnissy combines the Chinese instrument erhu with violoncello and voice. Finally, Chris Dench's piece explicitly addresses the special cultural identity of immigrants, while Brian Ferneyhough focuses on beginnings in music.
Christian Eggen, associated with the Cikada Ensemble, will conduct the entire concert.
