Concert | Sonic Arts Lounge / Baltic Music

Traditional Sutartines from Lithuania

Songs from an almost forgotten Baltic singing tradition, the sutartinas, will be heard for the first time in Berlin. Their name is derived from the verb ‘sutarti,’ which means ‘to agree, to be in harmony with one another.’ The complex polyphony of the sutartines – based on the counterpoint of independent vocal parts with complementary rhythms and the dominant second intervals in the harmonic vertical – requires a keen ear and good coordination among the singers.

The vocal group Trys Keturiose has been working for several years to revive this old tradition; young Lithuanian composers Antanas Jasenka and the duo Linas Rimsa and Linas Paulauskis will combine folk songs with contemporary techniques. Electronic sutartines will be performed, and a party mix will demonstrate whether sutartines are suitable for lounge music or even dance music.
