Concert | Sonic Arts Lounge / Opening
Marina Rosenfeld, born in New York in 1969, lives and works as a DJ, artist and composer in Los Angeles. Her work goes beyond pure DJ music, incorporating the disciplines of composition, sculpture and photography, and is realised using turntables (vinyl records and self-produced acetate recording discs), electronics, guitars, video and slide projection.
In this performance, composer and radio playwright Frieder Butzmann slips into the role of master of ceremonies at the computer. He brings together samples of water sounds, drum rhythms and edited fragments of vocal music by renowned Baroque composers such as Scarlatti, Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, creating a unique water music experience. In the beginning of all beats, the basso continuo, Frieder Butzmann and Sonja Bender trace one of the roots of today's dance music, ‘techno baroque’.
Sonja Bender has filled her keyboard instrument not with sounds but with images. Her live projections accompanying the sounds from Butzmann's laptop invite you to a baroque feast for the eyes and ears.
The musician (percussion), composer and producer Raz Mesinai, born in Jerusalem in 1973, lives and works in New York. For over 10 years, he was one of the leading figures in the New York underground music scene. He has been producing albums since the age of 18 and has also become known under the names Badawi and Sub Dub (in a duo with producer and sound engineer John Ward).
His music covers a wide spectrum and ventures into different genres such as world music, electronic/dub and avant-garde music, and has been described by reviewers as either outdated or futuristic. In any case, his compositions are based on musical instruments, many of which he himself, originally a drummer, has mastered.
