The trilogy’s artistic discourse concerning the meaning of towers as symbols of power begins with the starvation tower of the Middle Ages, goes on to the watchtowers of totalitarian regimes and finally reaches the globally ruling bank towers of our time.
The discourse of all three parts is about an ambivalent outside-inside relation, between control and self-control, power and powerlessness. turmlaute.1 presented in 2006 in Frankfurt/mousonturm and in Olevano Rom./IT is isolating and introspective. The new part turmlaute.2, installed in a former border watchtower of the GDR, on the other hand is controlling and extrospective:
With the help of two laser sensors the passers-by outside are detected through tow loopholes from the so-called ‘lounge’. In a quasi-interactive way they trigger sound formations in the ‘observation room’ and text/image formations in the room below. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the observation room are painted in the green of military night vision devices, so that, from the inside, the view of the outside realities is not only acoustically but also visually ‘coloured’. In a chamber on the ground floor the first part of Turmtrilogie is installed.
