Stimmhorn

In the beginning there is the alphorn. Then, the first overtones: awry sounds against background pictures of lofty mountains. The duo stimmhorn (vocal horn) was founded in 1996 by Balthasar Streiff and Christian Zehnder – the beginning of a cross-border journey between voice and horn: stimmhorn leaves behind all genres and plays its way round all classifications. Quoting different musical styles and incorporating theatrical elements, the duo, using instruments and vocals, invents acoustic journeys between traditional and experimental sonic worlds.

In addition to its musical-theatrical performances, stimmhorn has realised crossborder productions in the areas of contemporary music, theatre, film and literature. Their commitment to innovation and experiment has brought Zehnder/Streiff several awards as well as a number of commissions. Also, stimmhorn has become a label for foreign-familiar sounds from the alpine regions.
