The International Nothing

The Berlin clarinet duo The International Nothing has been together since the year 2000. Initially, the two musicians, Kai Fagaschinski and Michael Thieke, worked together in the field of improvisation, focussing on the musical qualities of noise materials. Since 2002 they have been concentrating on compositions that they develop during rehearsals by listening attentively to the sound of their two identical instruments. Their music sounds like pure electronics, but it is these gifted clarinettists who manage to produce these varied, fine sound nuances and timbres. Ingenious combinations of multiphonics, resonance and phenomena such as additional and differential tones are temporally structured in often simple, but subtle forms. This gives rise to very quiet and strange realms of sound that entice the listener to explore the microscopic tones.
