Film essay by Uli Aumüller (2010)
Johann Sebastian Bach’s fugues are prime examples of an intellectual order and technical precision. At the same time they display a completely instantaneous, vital joy in music-making. Spontaneity and meticulous planning go hand in hand – just as is the case with Uli Aumüller, who deliberately tried to emulate the structural thinking of this masterful composer while working on his exceptional Bach film.
Eight people converse in changing constellations – musicians and musicologists, a choreographer, a philosopher, a sound researcher. Why is it that the person Johann Sebastian Bach and his music still has such a significant influence on our concept of music, centuries later. Due to the extensive research carried out, its careful composition and the subtle presentation of background images in this film, which was filmed in a bluescreen studio, the essay comes across as if it simply occurred on a pleasant afternoon.
