Egyptian sound artist and musician Mahmoud Refat has for many years worked to promote experimental electronics and music that stretch beyond commercial pop culture with his independent label 100 Copies Music, a web radio as well as a multidisciplinary festival that takes place in clubs, on streets, in public squares, shop windows and on the roofs of houses in the centre of Cairo. He can look back on a multifaceted musical career.
He played in local funk, acid jazz and post rock bands in different venues in Cairo before he began to write music for dance, theatre, cinema, television documentaries, experimental videos and short films. Beyond that, he has devoted himself to the fields of experimental electronics and improvisation both as a soloist and in cooperation with other musicians. In order to facilitate a fresh look on sound generation and electronic sound modulation, Mahmoud Refat often tries to combine the instrumental with electronics. His music is based on personal experiences in places and settings that he wants to rouse using electronics and experimental beats. “Field recordings”, acoustic recordings of places and acoustic surroundings, are part and parcel of his music. They are the relics of bygone times, which he brings to the present in his performances. “Ignored” sounds of society and “unadorned” patterns of daily life create acoustic documents of an always present history that on stage become the building blocks of a graceful soundscape.
