Susan Philipsz “Part File Score”

The sound works by Berlin-based Scottish artist Susan Philipsz are often created for particular locations and refer to their history and spatial features. For the Hamburger Bahnhof’s Historic Hall, she created a sound installation that related to the building’s former function as a train station and to its architectonic structure with its 24 steel supports. As a place of departure and arrival, of separation and return, the artist connected the former station with the eventful life of composer Hanns Eisler (1898–1962), who lived in Berlin in the 1920s and 1950s.

The exhibition takes place in the context of the Musikwerke Bildender Künstler series, which was initiated in 1999 by Freunde Guter Musik Berlin in collaboration with the National Gallery, and since 2002 with MaerzMusik. It is the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition; she has lived in Berlin since 2001.
