This exhibition reflects Walter Smetak’s multi-faceted oeuvre. It presents a selection of the elaborate “Plásticas Sonoras”, some of the instruments Walter Smetak invented in the 1960s and 1970s, and original documents from various archives: writings, films, graphic scores, concrete poetry and photos, all giving an insight into the many layers of Smetak’s philosophy. A two-day conference will explore Walter Smetak’s thinking, his influence on contemporary music and sound art in Brazil as well as thresholds of reception in Europe.
“Re-inventing Smetak” is a project by Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD and Ensemble Modern in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute.
Made possible by the German Federal Cultural Foundation. Supported by the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung and Pro Helvetia, Swiss Arts Council.
