In “A Recital for Terry Adkins” – an open ritual with new texts by Fred Moten, live interactions between instruments, electronic sounds, images and videos – George E. Lewis pays homage to the artist, performer and multi-instrumentalist Terry Adkins.
Three outstanding African-American artist personalities converge in this open-form ritual with live interaction between instruments, electronic sounds, texts and digitized still and moving images. George E. Lewis’ “A Recital for Terry Adkins” pays homage to the artist, performer, and multi-instrumentalist Adkins (1953–2014), who was celebrated for his Recitals presented within his gallery installations. Performed by Lewis himself alongside the New York-based Ensemble Pamplemousse, the piece also features texts by influential poet and scholar Fred Moten (*1962), newly written for MaerzMusik on the occasion of this European premiere.
Through his choice of instrumental and electronic means, compositional forms, improvisational styles, mathematical analyses, and historical reflections, George E. Lewis (*1952) sits at the vanguard of contemporary musical expression. An opportunity to get to know an extraordinary artist and free mind.
