Open Call: Looking for dancers

“Lucy has devoted herself almost entirely to writing for the dances in a way unprecedented in the history of modern movement,” choreographer and dancer Erick Hawkins writes in 1958. “No artist of first rank other than her has really collaborated with enough knowledge or love to fathom the problem of seeing and hearing at the same time.”

The composer Lucia Dlugoszewski in focus: MaerzMusik festival, taking place from 15 to 24 March 2024, together with choreographer and Artistic Director of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, Katherine Duke, Ensemble Musikfabrik and pianist Agnese Toniutti, explores works of Lucia Dlugoszewski throughout the years and her collaborations with choreographer Erick Hawkins. This two-year long research project began at MaerzMusik 2023, presenting some of her critically acclaimed contemporary music pieces. In 2024, the festival delves into her works that engage with dance and her life long collaboration with Erick Hawkins.

As Composer in Residence for the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, the composer and artist who died in the year 2000 wrote a series of choreographic compositions. Dlugoszewski not only composed works for ensemble, timbre piano, and orchestra, she also took a performative role and invented more than 100 percussion instruments for these works. Looking deeper into Dlugoszewski’s performance practice, the second part of the project will restage some of the composer’s most striking pieces for the Erick Hawkins Company. The choreographies, which have been up today barely performed outside the U.S., were set to Dlugoszweski’s experimental work. Combining movement and live music, translating scales into choreographies and building connections to the dancers through musical and emotional signals, Dlugoszweski’s pieces for dance ensembles stay unique in the history of modern dance.

For the restaging of some of her dance works, MaerzMusik is looking for four dancers from Berlin with experience of or training in the fields of modern and contemporary dance, improvisation and ballet. Berlin-based dancers are being joined by a dancer from the Erick Hawkins Dance Company. The participation in the project is paid.

An additional requirement is availability from 1 to 24 March 2024 for rehearsals and performances in Berlin.

Auditions will be held on 11 and 12 November 2023 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Schaperstraße 24, in Berlin.

All applicants are requested to send a short curriculum vitae and a video (mp4 or Instagram-Reel) that gives an impression of their dance qualifications by 9 November 2023 by email to MaerzMusik@berlinerfestspiele.de.
