Inspired by Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel “My Year of Rest and Relaxation”, the dance piece “M.y Y.ear O.f S.tress A.nd R.ealisation” explores the effects of external pressures on the body, the mind, and societal structures.
The young dancers of the Junior Company of Art & Dance Lörrach, all with competition experience, move through choreographically composed spaces and react with their bodies to pressure, expectations and the constant demand to perform. Their movements reflect the tension between external influence and internal processing, emerging through a dynamic interplay of discipline, doubt, and a drive for autonomy.
The choreography was developed in close collaboration with the dancers and evolved through an open, shared rehearsal process. Every movement carries personal meaning; each scene echoes lived experiences.
As the piece unfolds, it reveals how deeply change can take root when young people begin to question what is commonly accepted as normal. Dance becomes a language that speaks of exhaustion, rebellion, and liberation. Moments of synchrony stand for solidarity and support, while solos and duets give voice to individual truths. Subtle encounters show friction and understanding or even the courage to draw boundaries.
“M.y Y.ear O.f S.tress A.nd R.ealisation” is a choreographic statement on mental overload, social conformity, and the quiet force of self-empowerment, danced by young women who seek and assert their own voice in the system.

We are honoured to recognise an exceptional ensemble – a young company that captivates with remarkable expressive power, artistic courage, and choreographic clarity: the Art & Dance Junior Company from Lörrach. This group demonstrates what dance can be: a mirror, a question, a dialogue. They dare to explore new territory, stepping beyond familiar paths with curiosity, openness, and an infectious passion.
Their work unfolds through choreographically layered snapshots, shifting atmospherically from one emotional state to another without ever losing its inner coherence.
What stands out immediately is the group’s high level of technical excellence: they perform with impressive synchrony, strong stage presence, and clearly defined movement structures. Yet their piece reveals much more than just technical precision. With striking maturity and a nuanced sense for emotional depth, these young dancers have created a short work on stress and realisation that is both moving and thought-provoking.
What emerges here is no mere coincidence: the meeting of artistic excellence and creative autonomy is the result of a distinctive artistic process. Developed closely with their choreographer in workshop settings, the piece gave the dancers space to contribute their own thoughts, emotions, and impulses.
The choreography possesses a narrative strength that draws the audience in – not just as observers, but as participants. It explores group dynamics and pressure, inner conflict, and the courage to make individual choices. With remarkable skill, the company translates the internal tensions and challenges of stress into a compelling physical language. The stage becomes a space of resonance for a theme that could not be more current – and through this powerful ensemble performance, it finds a new artistic form.
