Jazz on a Summer’s Day

Newport ’58

Documentary film by Aram Avakian and Bert Stern
USA 1960

Set at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival, progressing from day to night, this concert film mixes images of water and the town with performers and audience. The documentary is considered one of the most beautiful jazz movies, suggesting peace and leisure and covering such diverse musical styles as bop, cool jazz, avant-garde and traditional jazz, as well as gospel, rock and rhythm and blues.

Performances by Jimmy Giuffre (supreme with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer), Thelonious Monk (with Henry Grimes and Roy Haynes), Anita O’Day, Chico Hamilton, Louis Armstrong, not to forget a youthful Roswell Rudd playing the trombone with Eli’s Chosen Six picture a vivid image of a jazz in between inventory and renewal.
