“Celebrating Eric Dolphy”

Eric Dolphy died tragically young fifty years ago in Berlin and left behind traces of music that demanded to be pursued. The alto saxophonist, bass clarinettist and flautist shone in equal measure as a daringly structuring composer and brilliant improviser. The oeuvre of the 36-year-old redefined the juncture of jazz with tradition, modernity and the avant-garde. His Blue Note album “Out to Lunch!” is regarded as one of the masterpieces of jazz.
Alexander von Schlippenbach, together with Aki Takase, whose international breakthrough succeeded in 1981 at the Berlin Jazz Festival, and a hand-picked band of improvising musicians, pays homage to this predecessor by picking up Eric Dolphy’s impulse. This evening is turned into a major celebration for an unforgettable and challenging innovator of recent jazz history.
