Concert | Sonic Arts Lounge

Nicolas Collins

‘So far, I haven't seen anyone dance to it, but I'm not giving up hope,’ writes Nicolas Collins on the occasion of the new version of his “Devil's Music”. That could change with its presentation at the Sonic Arts Lounge at MaerzMusik.

The original version of Devil's Music was created in 1985 from a chance combination of my fascination with early hip-hop DJs, my love for Cage's reverence for radio, the first affordable portable samplers, and a simple, homemade stutter circuit. The artist searches the radio dial for suitable material to sample (maximum sample time of one second!), loop, layer, re-trigger, play backwards, detune and re-rhythmize. The material comes exclusively from transmissions via medium wave, short wave, FM and scanner frequencies of other radio services at the time of the performance." (Collins)

To realise the digital remake, eight composers/musicians from the borderline between electronic composition and DJ culture will gather in the lounge of the Berliner Festspiele. Devil's music from a wide variety of individual and public channels can be expected at the highest musical level.
