Nicolas Collins

New York performer, composer and sound artist Nicolas Collins, born in 1954, studied composition with Alvin Lucier and worked with David Tudor and the group Composers Inside Electronics for many years. Collins is a pioneer in the use of self-made electronic circuits, so-called Handmade Electronics, microcomputers, radios, found sound material and transformed musical instruments. He created a combination between the trombone and the computer among other items, which allow him to steer sampled sounds using the trombone. In the 1990s Collins mainly lived and worked in Europe, particularly in Amsterdam and Berlin, where he was guest of the Artist-In-Berlin Program. Since 1997 he has been editor-in-chief of the Leonardo Music Journal, and since 1999 a Professor at the Art Institute of Chicago.
