Concert | Sonic Arts Lounge / North & Berlin
Founded in 1997 at the Documenta in Kassel, the audio-video project Rechenzentrum works at the interface between art and pop. Two albums on the German flagship label Kitty Yo, two 12" albums for the electronic label Shitkatapult / Kompakt and countless remixes and collaborations with artists from various fields (improvised, new music, dance) around the globe are examples of Rechenzentrum's diverse interests and points of contact.
With the help of countless superimpositions of found source material from the last 2000 years of cultural history, they develop chains of associations that formulate new aspects of the relationship between image and sound through their archaic image/sound language. The content-related statements and cross-references hidden in the layers always leave room for multidimensional interpretations.
The musical / film-theoretical socialisation of the individual Rechenzentrum members – Marc Weiser (music), Lillevän (video) and Christian Conrad (music) – enables them to deal with the new material in an irreverent and humorous way.
In the new album Director’s Cut, Rechenzentrum document their work in image and sound and clarify their definition of music as a concertante symbiosis of image and sound. The films by video artist Lillevän are not decorative accessories, but function as an instrument integrated into the composition, which in interaction with Marc Weiser and Christian Conrad’s compositions makes the music recognisable as colour.
