Collection and organisation determine every-day life at the natural museum. In the research collection of the museum, usually not open to the public, the diversity of nature becomes physically palpable: thousands of birds, crayfish, spiders, serpents, fossils and stones are collected, labelled and categorized. With over 30 million pieces the Berlin collection is one of the extensive worldwide. HUM – Die Kunst des Sammelns (The Art of Collection) paints a portrait of the museum, artistic and documentary, by and with its scientist, in texts, spaces, sounds, objects and scenes, and tells us about the world contained in drawers and glass jars, about the human passion for collection and the power of orderliness: taxomania.
