Salim’s Salon

“Salim’s Salon” is a staged concert with musicians from varied cultural contexts. What unites the four protagonists – ranging from Egypt, Cameroon, London and the Democratic Republic of the Congo – is their experimental approach to sound and music, as well as their own encounters with Western-postcolonial aesthetic norms. “Salim’s Salon” creates a place for these four individual positions to meet, while offering a space to reflect upon cultural attribution, the notion of the other, and contemporaneity in music. Their playing together – in duos, trios or solos – is not only directed at the audience, but also towards each other. Central to the project is the confrontation between free improvised music and clock time of the chronometer and score. Ever-present in this space is the awareness of the “colonisation of time” through the clock, the history of which – as an important tool in conquering and modernizing the world – runs as a thematic thread throughout the evening.
