As the first comprehensive retrospective in Berlin, this exhibition – jointly presented by SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik in collaboration with the Estate of Benjamin Patterson and Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden – reflects on the life’s work of Fluxus co-founder Benjamin Patterson, who passed away in 2016.

Amidst the uncertainties, clamancies and nebulosity of our times, we must still find space to intro- and retrospect. Or is it to intro-audite and retro-audite? Indeed, we must find space and time to listen in and listen back. This project is a deliberation on and celebration of the seminal work of African-American artist Benjamin Patterson (1934–2016). It is an attempt to unsilence, re-enact and re-interpret the extensive body of work of one of the founding members of the Fluxus movement. It is a possibility to listen at ear level.Six years after he transitioned to the greater beyond, it is time to take stock and time to commemorate Benjamin Patterson with a first comprehensive solo exhibition in Berlin. This exhibition will bring together original scores, texts, artworks, objects, videos, compositions and other archival material. The public programme will take the form of an invocation by contemporary artists of performances, concerts, lectures and film screenings On, Of, For, With Ben Patterson.SAVVY Contemporary, together with the Patterson Estate and MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, invites artists, curators, scholars and co-travellers to reflect and revive Patterson’s work of five decades. While being based on a multi-disciplinary curatorial approach that stems from Patterson’s worlds, this project wants to move beyond Fluxus, historically and artistically – a play on and with time, an archive in action.This is a long term research by SAVVY Contemporary, which brings together works from five decades by Benjamin Patterson, including “When Elephants Fight, It Is the Frogs That Suffer (2016–17)”, commissioned for documenta14 (Athens and Kassel, 2017).In collaboration with Barbro Patterson (Estate of Benjamin Patterson) and Elke Gruhn (Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden). This project is the sixth collaboration between SAVVY Contemporary and MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues, with works commissioned by Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

In What Century Will the Earth’s North and South Poles Change Polarities?

With “Holy 204”, Egyptian sound artist Yara Mekawei presents at the daadgalerie her first solo exhibition in Germany. Employing a variety of “resonating sculptures” created with a 3D printer, she takes visitors on a journey into the mysteries of Sufism, a subject that has fascinated her for years, inspiring her research and artistic work.

With “Holy 204”, Egyptian sound artist Yara Mekawei presents at the daadgalerie her first solo exhibition in Germany. Employing a variety of “resonating sculptures” created with a 3D printer, she takes visitors on a journey into the mysteries of Sufism, a subject that has fascinated her for years, inspiring her research and artistic work.Since 2014, Yara Mekawei has been working on a translation system for sounds heard in the background of Sufi texts; she uses a traditional, cryptographic method to encode and decode Arabic letters in numeric form. In “Holy 204”, Mekawei works with Sufi poems by philosophers from the tenth and thirteenth centuries. Translated into combinations of numbers, these poems serve as the basis for her sound compositions and 3D-sculptures — a translation process that not only adds another layer of meaning to the multifaceted wisdom of the past, but also brings it to life for the present.With her translations and transformations between analogue and digital materials, text and numbers, cipher and decipherment, past and future, as well as spirituality and rationality, Yara Mekawei poses the major questions of ethics in an emotionally impactful way — issues that have gained new relevance in the present-day pandemic.

The mycelium, the root system of fungi, serves as the guiding metaphor for this year's festival edition in search of new forms of encounter: This film programme – co-hosted by MaerzMusik and transmediale – provides insight into the current state of knowledge and activism in the world of fungi.

The visible and invisible relations that hold everything together, in music and beyond, mark the point of departure for MaerzMusik 2022. Sensing the forces of uncertainty, vulnerability, and transformations in our present, we want to evoke the question of how to relate in different and diverse ways.One of the guiding metaphors in this quest is the mycelium, the vast network of branching filaments or hyphae that builds the vegetative part of a fungus. The mycelium pervades the soil, traversing species and milieus, connecting, supporting, signaling, communicating, decomposing, detoxifying, and healing in ways that are yet to be fully understood.Mycology, the science of fungi, is a fast-expanding and highly diverse field of knowledge that brings together ecology, biology, soil science, neuroscience, psychology, Western and traditional medicine, nutritional science, cultural sciences and other disciplines, with a growing horizon of technical applications to address food security, climate change and the physical and mental health of humans – to such an extent that some are speaking of an ongoing “Mycelium Revolution”.This film programme, co-hosted by MaerzMusik and transmediale, aims at making available video material that reflects the current state of knowledge and activism related to the world of fungi, and the mycelium in particular.This archival film programme, compiled by Daniela Bershan and Nahla Koch as part of the “Mycelial Work Group” at “Thinking Together” (20.–25.3., 14:30–17:30, silent green, Atelier 2), presents a wide spectrum of publicly available audiovisual material that reflects the extent and diversity of theoretical and practical knowledges related to the world of fungi, and the mycelium in particular, including lectures, panels and interviews, research reports, DIY instructions, promotional material of mycelial technologies, artistic videos, and many others.Temporary, partial and incomplete as it necessarily is, this living archive reflects current manifestations of this highly dynamic phenomenon in the public media-sphere, mirroring the socio-cultural, aesthetic and discursive richness and heterogeneity of the ongoing “Mycelium Revolution”.The “Mycelial Media Archive” is co-hosted by MaerzMusik – Festival for Time Issues and transmediale.

MaerzMusik will take place from 21 to 30 March 2025 under the artistic direction of Kamila Metwaly. The 24th festival edition will open with the multimedia music theatre production <a href="${link:{uuid:{f8e2f59f-baea-44c9-9162-3afee63c40ab},repository:{website},path:{/bfs-de/maerzmusik/programm/2025/kalender/melencolia}}}">“MELENCOLIA – A Show Against the Indifference of the Universe”</a> by Brigitta Muntendorf and Moritz Lobeck at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. The work, commissioned by the Bregenz Festival and Ensemble Modern, will celebrate its German premiere at MaerzMusik in cooperation with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. Immersed in 3D soundscapes, performers from Ensemble Modern and the Apollo Choir of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden take listeners into a deep exploration of enigmatic, melancholic worlds where reality and virtuality are combined on stage.Over the following nine festival days, further multidisciplinary projects and concerts will be presented that transcend traditional dualisms, presenting new interrelational perspectives that underscore the profound interconnectedness of social, technological and ecological systems. Here, music and sound move beyond binary frameworks, reshaping our understanding of relational experience and opening pathways to a more unified perception of existence and listening.Central to this artistic exploration is Enno Poppe’s new composition “Streik“ for ten drum sets, which poses the question: What happens when a solo instrument is multiplied many times? Another perspective on percussion as well as a reflection on the power of breath is offered by the work “POETICA” by Chaya Czernowin, composed for Steven Schick and Les Percussions de Strasbourg. “Minor Characters” by Jennifer Walshe and Matthew Shlomowitz will be presented by Ensemble Nikel in their festival debut, alongside “Limina / Sensation 1” by Mark Barden and Ligia Lewis. And we are looking forward to the new work “Drifting to the Rhythms at the Southeast of Nowhere” by the Berlin-based duo Nguyễn + Transitory, which will be developed this winter in Thailand in collaboration with dance artists from Chiang Mai.MaerzMusik 2025 will also present works by Jad Atoui, Wojtek Blecharz, Raven Chacon, Susie Ibarra, Mazen Kerbaj, Panayiotis Kokoras, Kuba Krzewiński, Joan La Barbara, Catherine Lamb, George Lewis, Liza Lim, Wadada Leo Smith, Ute Wassermann, Pamela Z and others, alongside ensembles that include Percussion Orchestra Cologne, Synaesthesis, Yarn/Wire and The Monochrome Project. Together, composers, artists and musicians will push the boundaries of sound, inviting audiences to explore new, transformative possibilities in contemporary music.Tickets for “MELENCOLIA” are available now. The new work by the Berlin-based duo references a range of Southeast Asian folk-dance forms – combining them with experimental electronic music. In its third year, the Library of MaerzMusik was opened throughout the festival as a place for gatherings and collective reflection, facilitating encounters between artists, audiences and a range of content. Offering interactive formats, talks and artistic interventions, it aimed to create a space for the exchange of knowledge and shared experiences that was open to the public free of charge.

The festival is rooted in the multimodality of listening, contemporary music, and sound, employing concerts, performances, installations, music theatre, film screenings, and discursive formats to open up a space where life, art, and theory can co-exist.

The festival commences with an immersive auditory experience, reviving a pivotal moment in the history of new and experimental music through INA grm – Groupe de Recherches Musicales’ Acousmonium. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of François Bayle’s invention, we will showcase compositions for the loudspeaker orchestra by composers such as Beatriz Ferreyra, Eve Aboulkheir, François Bayle and others. EnsembleKollektiv Berlin explores the realm of conscientious listening with works by Helmut Lachenmann as well as Michelle Lou and Ashkan Behzadi. The intergenerational narrative unfolds with Simon Steen-Andersen’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Musik im Bauch” performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg. In this edition, we will continue our focus from last year on composer and artist Lucia Dlugoszewski: we have curated scores, including some unfinished ones, with Marco Blaauw and Christine Chapman that have been reconstructed by Ensemble Musikfabrik, rebuilt Dlugoszewski’s percussive instruments, and restaged works conducted for dance, performed by Berlin-based dancers in collaboration with Katherine Duke and the Erick Hawkins Company. Spread throughout the city, the series “Topographies of Hearing” features installations and interventions by Christina Kubisch, Jessica Ekomane, Audrey Chen and others. In navigating the uncharted territories of our collective futures, this year’s edition embraces the ongoing processes that are underway rather than fixating on conclusive ideas.We look forward to experiencing MaerzMusik 2024 with you!

MaerzMusik 2024 is positioning itself as an open-ended experience centred on conscientious listening, while also highlighting the constantly evolving tapestry of musical interplay among different generations and movements. Over ten days composers will explore soundscapes and narratives in works crafted for unique constellations of instruments, ensembles and performers. A Show Against the Indifference of the Universe
