Marking their 30th anniversary, the Dedalus Ensemble pays homage to composers with whom they have an unwavering relationship. Éliane Radigue developed the composition OCCAM Hepta I, part of the impressive OCCAM OCEAN series, in close artistic collaboration with the musicians. Catherine Lamb continues the tradition of open scores in this concert evening. Her music is influenced by the tuning systems of European and Indian classical music, as well as by her fascination with the physical interactions between sounds and spaces and her exploration of these phenomena with the musicians.
Éliane Radigue, one of the most important pioneers of electronic music, has been composing exclusively acoustic works for 25 years, created without written scores and in direct exchange with soloists and ensembles. Her series OCCAM OCEAN is inspired by the diverse physical wave structures of the universe, only a fraction of which we can perceive visually or acoustically. In the co-creative composition process, the musicians of Dedalus chose the image of a body of water, which makes waves sensually perceptible to them, serving as a sort of inner score.
Catherine Lamb’s Overlays Transparent/Opaque attempts to show forms beyond phenomenological clarity by superimposing seven constantly moving layers. This creates sound objects that cannot be grasped using clear categories such as loud/soft or foreground/background. “Opaque might suggest a tone that is filled, dense, and vibrant, whereas Transparent might indicate a tone that is losing its fundamentality, becoming fused into the intensity of opacity.”
As part of MaerzMusik, the Dedalus Ensemble is performing several portrait concerts offering insight into unique projects, all based on open scores. These projects and the exceptional musicians involved have enabled the ensemble to develop its own distinctive, dense sound. Defying traditional categories, the ensemble's artistic practice follows elaborate concepts yet conveys a sensual experience that remains both radical and captivating, subtle and powerful.
