Workshop, lecture recital & film screening | MaerzMusik x Wolke Library

Canone effimero

with Belenish Moreno-Gil (zambomba) and Lorenza Scaldaferri (vocals)

As part of the Library of MaerzMusik, this event brings together film, lecture-recital, and workshop to explore living traditions of Southern Italian folk music through the lens of the film Canone effimero, previously screened at the 2025 Berlinale.

The evening opens with a performance session and lecture recital led by musicians connected to the Mediterranean folk music practices: Belenish Moreno-Gil and Lorenza Scaldaferri. The session will introduce instruments, vocal techniques, and improvisational approaches that blur the boundaries between performance, ritual, and everyday life. Rather than a conventional concert, the format is conceived as a hybrid of lecture-recital, demonstration, and collective exploration, offering insight into the embodied practices and sonic textures that shape these traditions.

The workshop is followed by a screening of Canone effimero, a film that documents fragile and often overlooked musical practices from rural regions of Southern Italy. Beautifully shot in a 1:1 format, the film moves between ethnography and poetic observation, the film captures songs, rituals, and communal performances that exist largely outside institutional cultural frameworks. Its images and sounds reveal how music can function simultaneously as memory, social structure, and living archive.

By placing the workshop and screening in dialogue, the event invites audiences to experience these traditions from two complementary perspectives: through the immediacy of live sonic practice and through the reflective distance of cinematic documentation. Together they open a space to consider how ephemeral musical knowledge is transmitted, transformed, and reimagined in the present.
